What does a college admissions consultant do?

It’s my job to guide you through every step of the college admissions process- from finding schools to exploring majors to clicking send on your application, I’m here to help you make sense of it all. My personal philosophy about the college process is to help students find the schools that are the best fit for them and to help them present their authentic self in a way that they’re both proud of and that maximizes their chances of gaining admission to those schools. That means I’ll be suggesting schools, editing essays, helping prep for interviews, and generally filling in all the gaps in a student’s understanding of where to apply to college and how to do that effectively.

When should I start working with a college consultant?

As with many questions pertaining to the college process, the answer is “it depends.” For some students, the answer is “you don’t need one.” For others, in particular those students looking at the most selective schools or at particularly specialized programs, it can be valuable to start preliminary conversations as early as 9th grade. All that said, I begin serious work with most students sometime during their junior year and would say the earlier in 11th grade, the better.

How is your approach different from that of my high school counselor?

Your high school counselor and I have the same goal: to help you navigate the college search and application process successfully. Where we differ starts with the amount of time and energy I can dedicate to helping you- where they potentially have hundreds of students relying upon their guidance and advice, I only work with a handful of students per year. I also only focus on the college search and application process, so I’ll spend a lot of time helping you refine your college list, will edit lots of drafts of your personal statement and supplemental essays, and will go through your activities list with a fine-toothed comb- just to name a few of the many services I provide.
